Born and raised in Port Elizabeth, South Africa I started my journey in clay in 2016 after taking a creative sabbatical from my career in Corporate. Being creative has always formed an integral part of my life and although I have dabbled in several mediums before, clay seemed to have captured my heart.
Porcelain and stoneware is my preferred medium. Most of my pieces are hand-built, individually designed, and aim to be multi-functional. Often I am asked what my signature style is, which is a difficult one to answer because I tend to try different things all the time as I create a lot of one offs. I apply a wide range of ceramics making and glazing techniques, and enjoy experimenting with surface decoration and textures. I think I always knew I was never going to be a 1000 mug type of potter.
Mostly an autodidact, my artwork embraces my inner Wabi Sabi; the imperfect, impermanence and incomplete, in nature and in life is where I try to find beauty and inspiration. I enjoy experimenting with texture and combining it with sculpture to tell a story. My work is often accented with metallic lustres as I feel that it brings life to a piece. I often wondered why, but I grew up in the 80s and in a time when glitter and sparkles were reserved for special occasions, and only at night. I suspect that my love for using gold in my artwork is clearly my inner child’s demand to ‘put on the glitz’.
I make what I enjoy, and what inspires me.
